They Left Their Mark Behind

Britain fell under the influence of Rome’s expanding cultural pull long before the Claudian invasions of 43 CE. Trade was ongoing with mediterranean cultures as far back as the Phoenician era. Rome simply continued this lineage, but wanted much more, above and beyond, setting it sights on the the land then known as Pretani – The Painted People. This descriptive names is believed to refer to the wode paint worn by the native Britons, or even the tattoos they inscribed upon their bodies; which gave the mysterious Picts of the Northernmost territories their name, simply from the word ‘picture’.
Rome took it’s chances at conquest in 55 BCE under the ambitions of Julius Caesar, but merely dipped its toe in the murky waters of Britannia once the treacherous currents of the English Channel had been risked.
The Empire had to wait a further 98 years before they were ready to attempt a cross from Gaul. Why did they take almost a century before they were ready to attempt to assemble a invasion force?
